The public switched telephone network (PSTN) is ageing and is very expensive to maintain. BT therefore made the decision to end the life of the standard phone with phasing out having already started in 2023; Switch-Off will be concluded across the whole UK by 2027.

With the PSTN closure looming there are many businesses and consumers that need to take action in order to avoid being left without a connection.

In 2023, BT announced their nationwide  “Copper Switch Off”;  in other words, shutting down the ageing Copper Wire Telephone Network.

Local Exchanges are already being closed across the UK when they cease to be ‘profitable’  i.e. once 75% of a Local Area Network has switched from copper to fibre-optic – if you’re part of the remaining 25%, you could be disconnected &/or lose your current phone number with just  4 weeks notice ! Businesses and Consumers alike must take action in order to avoid being left without a connection.

Residential VoIP phone service offers a cost-effective way to make and take telephone calls at home — over the internet — without the need for a traditional telephone line.

With VoIP, you can do just about anything you can do with a traditional telephone line. Want to make calls to — and take calls from — voice callers with landline numbers, cell-phone numbers, VoIP numbers, or even non-fixed VoIP numbers? You can!

Some questions:

What’s a voice caller? That’s a person who uses a telephone to call another person.

What’s a VoIP number? That’s the number assigned to a VoIP user when they sign up for a VoIP service.

What’s a non-fixed VoIP number? That’s a number that doesn’t need a physical address, i.e., a number that can be tied to any location across the globe.

Here’s how VoIP works:

  • A VoIP caller uses an internet-connected PC, smartphone, or VoIP phone to place a call.
  • The caller’s VoIP service provider calls the other party.
  • The provider sends the caller’s digital voice signal to a server.
  • The server routes the digital voice signal to the phone of the other party, who hears it as audio.

Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SoGEA) is a product that enables users to purchase a broadband connection without a phone line (voice service).
To get broadband connectivity you either used your existing analogue phone line with broadband added on top or you ordered a new connection where the two were bundled together. Thus, traditional broadband services required two products: a telephone line (analogue) and broadband. But now you just need one – SoGEA.
Technology has changed the way we communicate and the needs and requirements of many users have changed. Voice over IP (VoIP) is now the standard application for business uses. VoIP simply means voice conversations are made over the internet, very similar to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
Plus, the public switched telephone network (PSTN) is ageing and is very expensive to maintain. BT therefore made the decision to end the life of the standard phone; phasing out already started in 2023 and will be concluded across the whole UK by 2027.
